Food for Thought – To Supplement, or Not to Supplement

To Supplement or not to Supplement, that is the question!

I was one of those people who really didn’t think much about supplements and thought they were pretty much a waste of time and money. My first introduction to supplements was when I did a 21 day Clean Gut cleanse by Dr. Alejandro Junger. You basically do protein shakes and eat clean for 21 days. Along the way you take a variety of supplements like a probiotic and digestives enzymes directly for gut health and take others for liver support and blood sugar regulation. I went into that process feeling the worst I’ve ever felt and came out feeling great!
I then got into the Primal Blueprint way of things and continue to take supplements off and on. I take a Probiotic called Primal Flora by the Primal Blueprint people. I don’t take it every day, but at least several times a week. I take a fish oil pill for those important Omega-3s. If you eat a lot of bacon and other pork products which are high in Omega-6s, you need to balance this out with the good Omega-3s. I live in Arizona so getting enough sun is usually not a problem, but in the winter it may get a little too cold and cloudy to get any effective sunlight. I’m talking about Vitamin D. You need good quality sunlight for just about 15 minutes a day to get a good dose of Vitamin D. It is an important vitamin helping with absorption of Vitamins A and C. But the most interesting benefit I think is also the most ironic. People tend to think that exposure to sunlight can trigger skin cancer, but Vitamin D helps prevent many types of cancers. Just don’t overexpose yourself and get sunburned. So when I can’t get direct sunlight, I take a Vitamin D supplement. I also take a Milk Thistle supplement for liver support. Did you know French people take Milk Thistle intravenously! They really love their wine! I also take Turmeric which is great for inflammation and helps protect against cancer.
One interesting supplement I take that I know for sure helps me is Collagen Hydrolysate. I use it for help with joint pain. I was diagnosed with arthritis in my spine a while back and since I’ve been taking it in my morning coffee or smoothie my neck feels a whole lot better! Here’s more info on collagen.
